Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis

As of January 2nd, 2024, Gervonta Davis was officially elevated to the WBA “Super” Lightweight Champion status following Devin Haney’s decision to vacate the belt and move up in weight. This means Davis is now the sole recognized WBA champion at 135 pounds, solidifying his position as the top dog in the division. Previously reigning as the WBA secondary lightweight champion, Tank Davis (29-0, 27 KOs) also known as Abdul Wahid has now ascended to the full title.

Davis, an American professional boxer has held multiple world championships in three weight classes, from super featherweight to light welterweight. He is known for his powerful punching and aggressive fighting style. He has a knockout-to-win ratio of over 80%, and he has been compared to boxing greats like Mike Tyson and Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Becoming champion by promotion instead of victory often earns mockery. “Tank” Davis, however, rejects the “email champion” label, sending a tongue-in-cheek message to the WBA: keep your “super” title. “I don’t want that ****,” said Davis on his social media account. “I want blood.”

Davis was born in Baltimore, Maryland, in 1994. He began boxing at the age of five, and he had a successful amateur career, winning the National Golden Gloves Championship in 2012. Davis turned professional in 2013, and he quickly rose through the ranks. He won his first world title, the IBF Super Featherweight Championship, in 2017.

“They can call it whatever they want, ‘regular,’ ‘super,’ whatever. I’m still the champion, and I’m gonna defend this title like any other. “This is just one step on the way to the top. I’m not satisfied with just being champion. I want to be undisputed, the best in the world. This belt is just another motivation to keep pushing,” said Davis.

Davis is ready to prove himself in the ring, and he’s not going to let the WBA’s decision hold him back. It remains to be seen how this situation will play out, but one thing is for sure: Gervonta Davis is not going down without a fight.

The first Crime Desk of 2024 is here! Leading this week’s column is a story involving the trainer of Gervonta Davis, Calvin Ford, who is accused of assault. Ford is the inspiration for one of the more popular characters in landmark HBO series The Wire. On a lighter note there’s also claims that Conor McGregor was indirectly involved in the death of an expensive parakeet.

According to the Baltimore Banner Calvin Ford, 58, was arrested by Baltimore Police on December 29 and charged with assault with a deadly weapon, stemming from an alleged incident that took place on October 16 in Las Vegas, NV. Ford is the longtime trainer of Gervonta Davis.

Davis, who recently stated he wished to be known as Abdul Wahid, put out a cryptic Instagram story shortly after news of Ford’s arrest became public. “The less people you chill with, the less problems you deal with,” wrote Davis.

Tank Davis' Coach: You Haven't Seen the Best of Him Yet

Davis is currently serving probation for a 2020 hit and run. Part of the house arrest he served for his sentence was served at Ford’s house.

UFC and PFL veteran Stevie Ray was located on January 2 after being missing for roughly 48 hours (per Daily Record). Ray’s family had appealed online for information on Ray’s whereabouts after they failed to get in touch with him for 12 hours.

Prior to going missing, Ray was last seen driving over Forth bridge in East Scotland at around 5:20 p.m. on New Year’s Day.

Writing on social media, Ray’s sister Kirsty Rae stated, “Thank you to everyone who shared my post and messaged me, my brother has been found safe and well.”

Ray is a near 40 fight pro who fought for the UFC between 2015 and 2019, where he scored memorable wins over Ross Pearson, Joe Lauzon and Michael Johnson. He joined the PFL in 2022 and won back-to-back fights against former UFC lightweight champion Anthony Pettis. His most recent appearance was a loss to Clay Collard in the PFL 6 regular season.

David Dunne is mourning the death of his prized $2,000 lutino conure parakeet after the bird succumbed to a heart attack in Drimnagh, Dublin last month. Dunne claims the bird died due to stress caused by drilling at a construction project close-by.

That project is an apartment building being constructed by former UFC champion Conor McGregor. Dunne claimed that he had an agreement with McGregor’s company to relocate his birds, but was disappointed when the company only offered to cover price of a van rental and not the cost of housing for the animals.

According to The Sun Dunne isn’t the only Drimnagh resident who is ‘livid’ with the construction project. That outlet claimed a number of residents have lodged objections against the disruptions it has caused.

Famed boxing coach Calvin Ford, who built a career training Baltimore youths like Gervonta Davis into champion athletes, is in police custody this week awaiting transfer to Nevada on felony assault charges.

Baltimore police on Dec. 29 arrested the 58-year-old as he was leaving the popular Upton gym where he trains. He is wanted in Nevada on two charges of assault with a deadly weapon following an incident in Las Vegas. Authorities there issued a warrant for his arrest on Oct. 16.

Gervonta “Tank” Davis took to X, previously known as Twitter, on Thursday to make the claim that the judge handling his criminal case has something against him because she won’t let the boxer start training camp or spend Christmas with his children.

Davis, 29, spent 44 days in a Baltimore jail cell earlier this year after a hit-and-run crash that injured four people. He is now looking to start training, but apparently is still not allowed.

“The judge will not let me go home to spend Christmas with my kids or to start training camp,” Davis tweeted. “I completed everything that I was supposed to. This lady has something against me, I don’t know why.”

Tank’s most probable opponent is Devin Haney, who has been engaging in a back-and-forth with Davis via X.

Davis will need to get the judge on his side to make the fight happen sooner rather than later, but tweeting about her won’t help.

Terence Crawford has doubled down on the promise that he would remain in the welterweight division if Gervonta Davis wanted to move up and fight him.

Following a career-best victory over Errol Spence Jr

Despite those plans seeming solid, he has been consistently asked about the potential of a fight with lightweight, ‘Tank’ Davis. The questions stem from a clip on social media in which the smaller man claims he could stop Crawford quickly.

Despite beliefs from ‘Tank’s team that the narrative is ‘dumb’ and that he was initially joking in the recording, the undisputed welterweight champion doesn’t seem to be playing around with his invite.

He told Sway that he would be there waiting should the Baltimore native ‘want to dare to be great.’

to become undisputed at 147lbs, ‘Bud’ Crawford is readying a move up to super-welterweight to win titles in one last division before he hangs up the gloves.Terence crawford and Gervonta davis

“Yeah, if he wanna dare to be great and be like all the other fighters that’s moving up two weight classes. Tell him come up here. He said I got a glass chin. So tell him come and touch it. At 147. I make 147 for him.”

“Then what the people gonna say? ‘Oh he’s beatin’ up on little guys.’”

‘Tank’ has also played a part in this stellar year for boxing, having beaten previously-undefeated Ryan Garcia three months before the Spence-Crawford fight.

He’s now looking at a return to the ring towards the end of the year and, despite the buzz around a Crawford fight, will likely be at 135lbs where he continues to move towards world titles.

Canelo Alvarez has now confirmed that he could be tempted into a potential fight with Terence Crawford.

The American undisputed welterweight (147lbs) world champion’s name is on everybody’s lips following his win over Errol Spence last month.

In the aftermath of that victory, Crawford has made it clear that he only wants mega fights moving forwards as he is 35 years old (36 next month) and admittedly approaching the end of his career.

His primary target is undisputed super-welterweight (154lbs) world champion Jermell Charlo.

However, Charlo is already scheduled for his own legacy fight as he will jump up two weight classes to take on undisputed super-middleweight (168lbs) world champion Canelo on September 30.GERVONTA DAVIS

As a result, Crawford has said he would be willing to leap up an unprecedented three weight divisions and fight the winner – even if it’s Canelo.

The Mexican has now given a sceptical response, but ultimately confirmed he would be open to the clash.

Canelo told Manouk Akopyan: “Look, I respect Crawford, he’s a great fighter.

“Sometimes it’s a little crazy – people are talking about how I’m gonna face a ‘small fighter’ like Charlo, but he’s big.

“Now everybody’s talking about if I’m gonna face Crawford who fights at 147lbs, who is smaller than Charlo.

In 2019, Gervonta Davis arranged a school supplies giveaway to “give back” to the kids of Baltimore, a city that ‘Tank’ felt backed him a lot. Davis considered the event “a way of showing my appreciation” and felt it “important” to “give back to the kids” who unfortunately did not have parents. Hence, ‘Tank’, in an attempt to “help them out” and solidify his connection with Baltimore, donated as many as “300 school bags and assorted school supplies“.

As per PBC, in the mentioned event, the Lightweight champion also made arrangements for food, games, and refreshments. Speaking with the media, Davis later declared that the entire budget for the event came “out of my own pocket”
Gervonta Davis. Once again, Davis, who feels there are children who look up to him, recently arranged a giveaway event and donated school supplies to underprivileged kids. However, according to a number of fans, Davis has not received sufficient media coverage for the deed.
Reporter Elie Seckbach took to X and informed that Davis did “a massive event this week”. Having mentioned the giveaway ‘Tank’ arranged, Seckbach mourned the fact that the news did not come to the boxing media’s interest. Along these lines, he added, “If he has a hiccup it’s headlines for weeks“. Following the tweet by Seckach, Leonard Ellerbe wrote, “Imagine that“.

Former two-division world champion Shakur Stevenson is convinced that he will be fighting Gervonta Davis in the near future, and he’s predicting it will be the biggest fight in boxing when it occurs. 0 seconds of 0 secondsVolume 0%

Stevenson (20-0, 10 KOs) is so confident the fight with the secondary WBA lightweight champion Tank Davis will happen he’s willing to stick around the 135-lb division, waiting for it to happen one of these days. Hopefully, Shakur’s dream comes true because, based on Tank Davis’ ten-year resume in the sport, he will NOT be fighting Stevenson in this lifetime. Gervonta, who Floyd Mayweather Jr. promotes, has never taken a challenging fight during his entire career, and it’s improbable to think that Floyd would suddenly change the way he’s been matching the Baltimore native by putting him in with someone who could possibly beat him. It could be a mistake for Shakur to pin his hopes on a fight with Gervonta going down one day in the distant future because he could wind up empty-handed with nothing to show for the many years he’s waited.

Gervonta Davis

Look at Vasily Lomachenko as a textbook example of the futility of trying to get a fight with Tank. Loma has been pursuing a fight with Tank Davis for the last five years since 2018 with no luck.
Now 35 years old and showing signs of slippage, Lomachenko is still being avoided by Tank Davis, which tells you all you need to know about Shakur’s deluded pipe dream of one day getting a fight with Gervonta.

It’s not going to happen, and the needy Shakur will likely end up losing out on the best years of his career, sticking around the 135-lb division, waiting on a fight with Tank that never materializes. “There’s only one fight. Me and Tank will be the biggest boxing fight in the world when it happens. I can see it happening not too far in the future. I think Tank will sign that contract, and I’m going to sign the contract too,” said Shakur Stevenson to 2ndWindPod about his belief that Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis will fight him. “135, 40,” said Shakur on what division his fight with Tank Davis will occur.

Gervonta Davis

Stevenson should note what happened with Lomaachenko, with him being avoided by Gervonta, and realize that waiting & hoping for a fight against the Mayweather-promoted fighter is a dead-end street. If Shakur stays at lightweight, hoping for a fight with Tank, he’s likely to be avoided and have nothing to show for the years he waited.

Shakur isn’t just being avoided by Tank. All the other top lightweights want nothing to do with him, which won’t change. Even Devin Haney fled the 135-lb division to avoid Shakur, heading to safer waters at 140. That’s where Shakur should move to right away if he knows what’s good for him.

Floyd Mayweather has had his say on who tops the pound-for-pound rankings in the wake of some high-level match-ups featuring the best in the business – but he thinks one fight still needs to happen before the current debate can be settled.

First up, Japanese knockout artist Naoya Inoue blew away Stephen Fulton to become unified super-bantamweight king having already established himself as the undisputed champion in the division below.

The ease with which he saw off Fulton’s challenge, and then the knockout blow he delivered in the 8th round, took him to the top of the P4P rankings for many.

Floyd Mayweather and Gervonta Davis

However, just days later, Terence Crawford put in a similarly superb showing against Errol Spence Jr. He dominated just about from the off and eventually stopped Spence in the 9th round to take all four world titles in the welterweight division.

The consensus was that the win immediately elevated him above Inoue in the P4P, but not everyone agrees.

Speaking to FightHype, former multi-division world champion Mayweather has plenty of praise for Inoue.

“I think he’s a helluva fighter, I take nothing away from him, helluva fighter. And I like him. He takes a lot of stuff from my playbook, but that’s OK, in boxing, you’re supposed to take something from the gears.”

Floyd mayweather

He then proposed what would be a superb fight with one of his charges, a multi-weight world champion, fearsome puncher and one of the best active lightweights in the world who most recently knocked out Ryan Garcia.

Floyd Mayweather Wants Naoya Inoue To Fight Gervonta Davis At Catchweight

For Inoue to fight a guy as big as Tank, would be like Gervonta moving up to welterweight to take on Terence Crawford. The tiny 5’5″ Tank would be food for Crawford. Floyd says he wants the Japanese star, who recently moved up to 122, to come to the U.S., be randomly drug tested, and then face Tank Davis at a catchweight.

Floyd says he wants the Japanese star, who recently moved up to 122, to come to the U.S., be randomly drug tested, and then face Tank Davis at a catchweight. There was no mention of what weight the fight would take place if Inoue agreed to it, but it wouldn’t be surprising if it were 130, meaning Naoya would have to move up eight pounds from 122, which is a lot of weight for such a small fighter to go up.

inoue

As big as Tank Davis is, he would likely rehydrate to have an enormous weight advantage over Inoue if they agreed to fight at a catchweight. Taank fights in the lightweight division and has competed at 140.

It wouldn’t be surprising if Tank had a 20+ lb weight advantage over Inoue after he rehydrated for a fight between them, and it would be a massively unfair fight. It’s unclear why Mayweather mentioned the random drug testing because Inoue gets tested for drugs like any fighter that competes.

inoue

Does Floyd suspect Inoue is using PEDs to help him win fights? Mayweather sounded bitter today, going into a rant about how the Japanese star Inoue (25-0, 22 KOs) has the #1 spot in the pound-for-pound list after his eighth round knockout win over previously unbeaten WBC & WBO 122-lb champion Stephen ‘Cool Boy Stef’ Fulton (21-1, 8 KOs) last month on July 25th in Tokyo, Japan.

Floyd was bent out of shape, talking about how Tank Davis isn’t on the pound-for-pound list like Inoue. “So when we look, honestly speaking, the kid from Japan, Inoue. So even though he got the ‘Cool Boy Stef’ [Stephen Fulton], he got the victory over ‘Cool Boy Stef.’ ‘Cool Boy Stef is not a heavy puncher,” said Floyd Mayweather Jr to Fighthype, discrediting Naoya ‘Monster’ Inoue’s recent eighth round knockout victory over former unified WBC & WBO super bantamweight champion Stephen Fulton on July 25th

“He’s [Fultton] a good boxer. So everything is about timing, but he went out there, and he did what he was supposed to do. I want ‘Cool Boy Stef’ to hold his head high. I’m proud of him. Any true champion can take a loss and bounce back. “But as far as Inoue, it was a Filipino fighter he had fought twice, Donaire. So Donaire was giving him fits in the first fight, and if I’m not mistaken, Donaire was somewhere close to years old when he fought him the first time.

inoue

“Whereas and he [Inoue] was in his 20s, so he should have knocked him out in the first fight, fighting a guy at that age. A lot of times, we look and find different ways to try to bash fighters and talk bad about fighters. I’m not going to do that. “What I need Inoue to do is to come to fight in the USA, random blood and urine testing,”  said Mayweather.  “I would like to see him fight Gervonta Davis at a catchweight.
