Floyd Mayweather Reveals Who He Wants Gervonta Davis To Fight

After his stunning stoppage win over Ryan Garcia earlier this year, Gervonta Davis ascended to the status of one of the biggest stars in boxing, and speculation has been rife over who the Baltimore puncher will take on next.

His momentum was somewhat stunted after being sentenced for a hit and run offence dating back to November 2020, for which he served a short jail sentence.

‘Tank’ and those around him will no doubt be keen to get his career back up and running as soon as possible, and long time mentor Floyd Mayweather has revealed who he would like to see Davis fight next.

Speaking to The Fight Guys, Mayweather named the polarising WBO world super lightweight champion Teofimo Lopez as who he would like to see lock horns with Davis.

“I feel like the biggest and the best should fight each other. The lightweight division has so much talent. Devin Haney and Shakur Stevenson, that’s a great match up. So is Teofimo Lopez and Gervonta Davis.”

Lopez was recently crowned a two weight world champion following his win over Josh Taylor back in June, and is certainly one of the tougher tests out there for Davis.

However, as seems to be the case with all the match ups boxing fans want, there are a few obstacles that would likely prevent Lopez and ‘Tank’ getting it on any time soon.

Lopez is signed to Bob Arum’s Top Rank and fights on ESPN, whilst Davis is Al Haymon and PBC’s crown jewell, and it is unlikely they would let him fight anywhere other than Showtime.

Davis has also only boxed once at 140lbs back in 2021, and his focus at the minute seems to be on the lightweight division.
